CDAA Newsletter Article: Would you like assistance with advising people with disability?

 In Disability Awareness, NDCO Projects

We know that it is important for someone to have timely access to good career advice when making decisions about their future pathways.  And sometimes good career advice for people with disability is about providing them with extra details, such as possible accommodations and adjustments available in further study or the workplace.  That’s where your regional National Disability Coordination Officer (NDCO) Program can come in handy.

The NDCO Program is funded by the Australian Government to improve the transition of people with disability into further education or training, and then to subsequent employment.   It also aims to identify and implement ways to increase their successful participation while they are undertaking tertiary education.
There are 31 NDCOs across the whole of Australia. Rather than focusing on working with individuals, they look for ways to: link existing roles and programs together; upskill staff and professionals; raise awareness about opportunities, supports, resources and challenges for people with disability in study and employment pathways.  So the NDCO Officer in your region can connect you and your client with the right people, with the right information.
As the NDCOs work across regions, they have a broad perspective of what is and what’s not working well in terms of transition and participation. Working collaboratively, they are able to develop strategies and resources to address gaps that are identified. A range of excellent career and transition resources have been developed that are freely available for you to use.

These include:

  • Tips for getting ready for work and study for students with disability – 10 top tips to help young people with disability transition from school to further education or employment.
  • Mountain climbing – providing students with lived experience of disability a how-to guide of moving from tertiary education to employment.
  • Helpful hints for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder

You can find and the full range of NDCO resources at Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET)
